Pictures from the Past

Find a picture depicting something that happened during The Great Depression, email it to me at chad.hammonds@bisd.net, I will post it.  It is your job to respond to it in at least 2-3 sentences, pose a question, and then respond to at least two questions posed by others.

  1. This is a really cool picture Melissa! The lady in the photograph is sad and worried, which is how most people are in the Great Depression, right? She has so much worry on her face it makes me worry just by looking at it! Have you ever been worried/sad about something like the woman? Do you think Bud has ever had this kind of feeling?

  2. Yes Madi, I have been sad and worried like the woman in this picture. When a family member or friend is sick or in pain I have that worried, sad, helpless look on my face that this lady has on her face in the picture.i think Bud may have had a similar facial expression in chapter 3 when he was trapped in the shed. I think he was probably worried that he wouldn’t make it out of the shed alive after hearing the story about the other kid and seeinh what he thought was a blood stain. Have you everseen someone with the same facial expression as that woman and wondered what they were worried or sad about?

  3. Madi, that is a great picture. It shows the pain and hardship that everyone went through at that time, whether not being able to feed your family, being homeless, or whatever. How would you feel if you lived in a makeshift home, and saw that your family was still hungry but there was nothing you could do, or that you couldn’t bathe and clothe your family?

  4. Melissa, that would be unbearable for me to have to seee my family and I go thorough those kind of hardships without anything to do about it. It would be hard becuase you would finally relize what is happening and what you can’t have that you used to. And yes i have seen people with the worried, sad look on their face before. People who have just lost their homes in a fier on Tv or a family member died, and i have also seen random people at school and on the roads with that look on their face and i always wonder what upset them. I bet Bud had this look on his face when his mother died and he had to worry about going to the orphanage. What about you? have you seen people like that?

  5. Madi , I have seen people with that look on my face, and it always makes me feel greatful for what I have. I always feel the urge to help them out, whether I give them a few dollars, buy them some food, or give them a ride somewhere. Madi, do you ever feel helpless, like no matter what you do you will never be able to take that sad, worried look off of their face?

  6. Barry, this is a very good picture! These people are standing in a bread line which is a common thing in those hard times.Nobody could provide food, shelter, or clothing for their families, and it took a lot of courage to stand in those lines to get food for their family. Barry, how would you feel if you couldn’t provide food for your family and had to stand in a bread line or live in a shelter?

  7. Melissa- do you think you would ever go through as much pain as the lady in your picture.

  8. Melissa: Yes, i have felt so helpless that no matter what i did I could never wipe the devastating look off of someone elses face- but not my own. I have tryed to make people feel happy and hopeful, but sometimes it just doesn’t work and there is nothing you can do.

  9. Good pic Barry it is a sad thing that people would have to stand in lines like that just 2 get a tiny bit of food. Most of those people had to get food for there familys so that there familys wouldnt starve but some people couldnt get enough food for there familys and went without food and just think if you were at he back of the line you prbably wouldnt get any food at all. What it you were one of those people and you had get food for your family how would you feel? And how would you deal with the situation?

  10. that is really sad how she looks it makes me want to kinda cry. it is just really sad how much people had in the deppresion it makes me feel greatfull about what i have and that im not living like that. you can tell that the lady im the pic dosnt have much cause she is living in a tent with children and the children have to go ther that to and that would be really hard on them especilly the mom cause i bet that she has no husbund to help with the children and she has to take care of them alone. Emagine your self like that lady how would feel and how would you go on? How do think the lady feels?

  11. Stephanie, I don’t think i will ever endure as much pain as that lady.I live in a house full of people who love me. I have plenty of food, clothes, and everything that this lady doesn’t have. When you are older do you think you will strive to help people that can’t help themselves?

  12. Parker, I think that that lady feels defeated, kind of like Bud does in chapter 3. If I were in her shoes I don’t think I could go on because she has nothing and that is not about to change.

  13. Barry good picture . It really allows someone to think and kind of feel what the people back then felt.Do you think bud was ever in that situation? Do you think your picture show what some people are going through now?

  14. melissa, I like your picture. It shows what most women went through. I would hate to go through that.

  15. Good picture Barry, why did you pick this picture? What effect does it have on you?

  16. mellisa:i realy like your picture it is realy sad to look at it. i can just see the poverty and invisible tears hidden in her eyes. i think that the mother is trying to hide the tears back to make her children beleive that he is strong!

  17. barry: i like your picture it realy shows how the great depression was back then. it realy paints a picture in my mind that that is probably what bud had to go through just to get a little bit of food. do you think that you could go every day and wait in line for hours?

  18. Reilly, that is a great picture! It’s true in those tough economic times most people were jobless, and it was hard to find jobs let alone jobs that paid enough to support their families.Do you think that the economy will get so bad that it starts to resemble the great depression?

  19. Melissa- if you were one of those kids in the picture how would you feel to live a big portion of your life in the Great Depression?

  20. Dear Mr. Hammonds,

This picture reminds me of our society. We have pawn shops, consignment stores, Goodwill stores, and one store by Martha’s Kitchen that you can buy things from five to fifty cents for people, who do not have homes. Today, it would not be politically correct to call the store, “The Poor Man’s Store.”

Why do you think we still have these stores in today’s society?

  21. Parker,

I believe the lady feels very sad, and she is worried about her children and how she will feed them. She may be embarrassed because her family doesn’t have a home anymore, and a photographer is taking her picture. Where is her husband?

  22. Melissa,

I think that some families are already feeling the way they did during the Great Depression. We have homeless people come to our church all the time. They say they live out of their cars. We always give them food from the church pantry and tell them about Martha’s Kitchen.

  23. i like all of the pics cause they show what it would be like to live in the deppresion even though we cant grasp all the hardships they all had to face…!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
